Although coyotes are the most common wildlife in Hidden Hills, residents may occasionally encounter larger species, including black bears, mountain lions, and bobcats. These animals generally avoid human interaction, but proper awareness is key to staying safe.
Bears
Black bears are typically not aggressive, but they may become defensive if startled or if food sources are accessible.
To stay safe:
- Never approach a bear.
- Keep trash locked and remove attractants such as pet food or fallen fruit.
- If you encounter a bear, speak calmly, back away slowly, and allow the animal an escape route.
Mountain Lions & Bobcats
Sightings are rare, but these animals do inhabit the surrounding hills.
Safety Tips:
- Keep pets indoors from dusk to dawn.
- Never approach or attempt to follow large cats.
- If you see one, make yourself appear larger, speak firmly, and slowly increase distance.
Reporting Wildlife Sightings
For bears, mountain lions, or other uncommon wildlife, report sightings directly to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife using the Wildlife Incident Reporting System.
